1ST PLACE - ESSAY 1
Ever since I
was little, I always knew I was different. I
am a 15 year old girl and from what I have read, it is less likely for
girls to be left-handed. When
people would see my writing, they would always comment on my
left-handedness. As every left
hander knows, I have struggled with many things that would not faze a
right-hander. Things like writing,
throwing a ball, or tying my shoe. I
would always smudge ink, make my dad go running after the ball, or loop
the lace around the wrong way.
Whenever
I learn that someone is left-handed,
I automatically feel a connection with them. I
love talking to my two left-handed friends about how unique we are.
My left-handed friends are my two closest
friends because I feel like we have this connection.
I
really like being left-handed because I feel
unique. I feel like I know a secret
that the right-handed world does not know. Lefties
think, act, and process information differently than righties and I
find that so fascinating. I have
had many obstacles to overcome as a lefty. Being
left-handed has made me more independent. I
have learned that people can not always teach you how to do everything.
Sometimes, you have to learn things on your
own. As a southpaw, I have noticed
that I am more adept at problem solving. When
I am faced with a challenge I know that I will be able to figure things
out.
Being
a lefty has made me more confident. I
am comfortable with myself. People
may make fun of me for being a lefty
but I know deep down they are just jealous. Being
left-handed is challenging, but I love it and I would never exchange it
to be a normal, run-of-the-mill righty.
2ND PLACE - ESSAY 4
I
find many reasons I like being a left-handed. Sports
and games of the sort are good reasons for liking my left-handed
status. I
competed in the martial arts circuit throughout my teen years and won a
few
championships. One reason was skill and the other reason, which is true
of any
sport, I was left handed. A majority of the time a person in martial
arts will
compete against right-handed people, so when a person competes against
a lefty
they don’t know how to approach the fight. It makes it a very
awkward fight for
right-handers not being able to position correctly and having a lot of
open
points in their defensive game exposed. As a lefty I face many
right-handed
opponents so I don’t have the same type of awkwardness and
opening
right-handers would.
Another
thing about being left-handed that I have
always enjoyed was my approach to problems. Left-handed people live in
a
right-handed society, everything caters to and is made for righties. As
a lefty
we learn to adapt by either using our right hands and become
ambidextrous or
find ways around the issue. Due to this dilemma lefties think in a
different
way seeing and perceiving the world around us in ways others
can’t. Even at
work and school my perspective on things has been proven to be unique
and
original.
When
I was in about 5th grade we had an
introduction on the first day of school. We would say something about
ourselves
that was unique that we were proud of, I said that I was left-handed. I
am proud
to be left-handed. Being a lefty has shaped and molded my world in ways
I
personally feel others will never be able to see.
3RD PLACE - ESSAY 2
In Jamaica,
as a young child, i was chastised for being left-handed. I
was sometimes forced to use my right hand and i would cry and cry
because i thought it felt funny. Eventually, my family gave up trying
to force me to be a righty. Growing up, i have always been really
artistic, and according to others, really intelligent. Other than the
difficult bouts with right-handed scissors in the fourth grade, or
learning to drive a car designed for right-handed people, i feel as if
i have the upper hand. I love being unique. Everything, from the way i
dress to the way i speak is unique. And i think being left
handed was a
gate-way to accepting my individuality. In conclusion, i know that if i
were right-handed, i would be a different person. I love who i am, but
i really love the fact that i am part of a small crowd of those who use
there left hands.
CONTEST
RULES
Okay,
here we go. Starting today (June 1, 2008) through September 1, 2008 the
Left Handed
Contest/Scholarship begins! Write an essay of no more than
300 words entitled, "Why
I Like Being Left Handed".
One entry per person submitted to my email, beinglefthanded@gmail.com.
Sorry but no family or friends are eligible. Top 5 essays chosen by me
and a few other lefties will be posted on this website in September and
voted on by my website guests. Due to the bad
economy my
funding sources have dried up so I'm putting up $100, winner
take
all, and hopefully the prize amount will increase before the contest
ends. How Can You Help?
Please
shop my left handed store and ebay listing page. Even if you're not
looking for a left handed item, if you go through my website I get a
little commission on whatever you buy, which helps support this website
and my contests ( I have more planned.) Also, if there are any ads
posted on my website check them out if you're interested. Every little
bit helps. Good luck and let the writing begin!
If this is successful I will run
a contest more frequently. Not only will I award cash
prizes but also left handed items.
Please help make this happen by telling all your left handed friends
and don't forget to sign up for my newsletter, "Out In Left
Field"
where I will be supplying more information about these events (By
signing up, this will give me an idea of how much
interest there is!)
Thanks for all the support in getting this sight up and running with
all the great email ideas and comments. Being Left Handed
gets better
each day.
